Soup and Chili Fellowship
The local Child Evangelism Fellowship of Michigan Shoreline Chapter will hold a free Soup and Chili Fellowship on Tuesday, Sept. 23 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Rothbury Community Church. The event will include a pie auction and silent auction, plus information about what the organization has been doing in recent months. To register, call the Shoreline Chapter office at 231-861-2225. The church is at 2500 W. Winston Road in Rothbury.


Hiking and S’Mores
Camp Newaygo will host Hiking and S’mores on Thursday, Sept. 18, offering guided walks through the camp’s more than 100 acres of rolling wooded terrain, with mid-hike snack breaks. The event will start at 5:30 p.m. The fee is $10 per person. Preregistration is required and can be accomplished online at campnewaygo.org/fall-adventure-outings. The White Cloud Community Library has a variety of programs and events planned for the next few days.
*Adult Color Me Calm will be on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. at the library. Participants are invited to stop in and enjoy some quiet relaxation.
*Full Circle Farms will guide participants through a Flower Arranging class on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. Registration is required.
*For International Chocolate Day and Roald Dahl Day, the library will be present “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m.
*In celebration of mystery author Agatha Christie’s birthday, the library will have some deduction-based board games out for players to enjoy on Monday, Sept. 15, starting at 3:30 p.m.
*The library’s first Children’s Crafternoon and Coloring will be on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m. Children are invited to enjoy crafts and coloring at their own pace.
*For International Talk Like a Pirate Day, the library will hold kids Storytime on Friday, Sept. 19 at 10:30 a.m., featuring stories about pirates in the library.
*On Batman Day, Saturday, Sept. 20, the library will present some of the old “Batman” episodes from 1966, starting at 10 a.m.
*White Cloud Public Schools will have a half day of school on Monday, Sept. 22, so the library will present “The Hobbit, an Unexpected Journey” at noon in honor of National Hobbit Day
*A second Accessible Small and Rural Communities meeting on Monday, Sept. 22 at 5:30 p.m. will help determine what to do with the remainder of the grant money provided by The American Library Association for accessibility upgrades around the library.
*The Friends of the Library Annual Pig Roast will be on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. The event will include a small celebration in honor of the wooden train trestle over the White River turning 150 years old. Tickets are available at the library.
A National Ghost Hunting Day scavenger hunt will be on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. People who can find all of the ghosts hiding around the library will get small prizes.
*On Monday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m., the library will present the anniversaary edition of “Mary Poppins” as part of the Musical Monday series.
*A Decluttering Workshop presented by Stephanie Foley of Clearly Manageable will be on Friday, Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. Participants are invited to drop-in and learn some free tips and tricks.
The Newaygo Area District Library has a variety of programs and events planned for the next few days.
Symbolic Monarch Migration will be offered from Sept. 1 until Sept. 27. Children ages preschool to 15 are invited to stop by the children’s library to color a paper monarch butterfly that will migrate to Mexico to overwinter there. Participants will receive paper monarchs back in the spring from USA or Canada along with letters from students in Mexico. The program represents a partnership with the Monarch Joint Venture.
From Sept. 15 to 20, children from preschool through age 15 will be invited to create caramel apples with air-dry clay with the Clay-Mel Apple Drop-in Craft project. Adult supervision is required.
The library will welcome the return of illustrator, cartoonist and author Corinne Roberts to teach a Fall Illustrative Landscape Class on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 5 to 6 p.m. Roberts is the author of the webcomic “Out and About!” Supplies will be provided for the class, which is intended for adults and teens. The class is supported by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.
Mini Makers Terrarium Edition will be offered to people ages 10 to 18 on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants will be guided in the process of creating their own miniature terraria. The library will provide the supplies, including plants, containers, soil and decorative elements. Registration is required. The program is supported by the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.
Starting Sept. 22, readers will have the opportunity to register for the Fall Into Reading Fall Reading Challenge. Participants can track their reading online on ReadSquared. Adults and teens age 16 and older can earn entries in the library’s prize drawing by completing books or submitting Patron Picks. Logs are due Nov. 22.
Beginning Sept. 22, Bingo cards will be available for children in the Give Me S’more Books Bingo Fall Reading Challenge. Parents can register children to track their reading online at ReadSquared, and young readers can earn treats and prize drawing entries. Each additional Bingo will earn participants additional entries, as many as five total tickets. Readers can also fill out Patron Picks to earn prize drawing tickets.

On August 27, 1856, in a speech in Bronson Park in Kalamazoo, Congressman Abraham Lincoln of Illinois urged support for John C. Fremont, the first presidential nominee of the new Republican Party. It is said to be Lincoln’s only speech to a Michigan audience.
Fremont, Mich. and communities in several other states are named for The Pathfinder.
